The Dan Kaminsky Fellowship: Year One in Review

It is a difficult task honoring a man who, quite literally, saved the internet. How do we continue the legacy of a hero to so many of us in the cybersecurity community? One of the ways we saw fit to do this at HUMAN was with the Dan Kaminsky Fellowship. Dan was a Human who believed in the good that could be done with this internet - especially within open-source work. A hacker at heart, Dan wanted to do everything in his power to move the world forward using his gifts.

We caught up with the first recipient of the Dan Kaminsky Fellowship, Jonathan Leitschuh, to discuss his experience as the first Fellow, his passion for his open-source project, and his future in open-source.

The Magic of Black Hat

“Actions have consequences” is a term a lot of us have heard before. Usually, when it’s said it is implied to be a bad thing. A semi-direct way of saying that for the actions you have taken there is a price to pay. HUMAN has never been a company that molds its goal and morals to the status quo. Here at HUMAN we lean into the positive narrative of our actions having consequences because our actions are making us a company of consequence.

It all started in a sci-fi book store in Brooklyn in 2012. From that humble start there has been many new beginnings along the way; including name changes, acquisitions and now the merger. There’s a lot that has happened in between all that, there is a lot that has happened before and even more will happen after.

It all came together during a week in Las Vegas at Black Hat.

Weeks before one of the biggest cybersecurity conferences in the world, HUMAN and PerimeterX announced an industry changing merger. Both companies decided to move forward as one with the HUMAN name. The size of the company instantly doubled and a third of that company would be at Black Hat. As I embarked on my first cybersecurity conference and reflected on our recent actions. I went into it with one singular question to be answered. What does it mean to be a company of consequence?

HUMAN’s Guide to the Digital Galaxy 2nd Edition: Network Effect

There is an age-old saying "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." Here at HUMAN, we combine that into one philosophical use case: network effect.

Network effect is a collaborative effort from all of our customers and the Human Collective to make sure a detection event for one is a protection event for all. If visibility is the telescope that lets us observe the digital space, network effect is our spaceship built on creating a protected ecosystem that allows us to travel across the digital universe to protect all corners of the internet with speed and longevity. Network effect is an important aspect in cybersecurity as a whole. It is an integral part of our modern defense strategy and helps to give us a technological advantage in order to collectively protect all our customers across multiple ecosystems.
